Long before the first rays of sunlight reach the tops of the palmettos, Florida's woods are already awake.
The air is cool and heavy with the smell of damp earth. Tree frogs slowly quiet as songbirds begin announcing the new day. Somewhere just beyond the cypress trees, you hear it — the unmistakable sound of a wild hog rooting through the leaves.
It's a sound every Florida hunter knows.
Unlike many game animals, wild hogs don't follow a traditional season. In much of Florida, they're available year-round, making them one of the most accessible and exciting animals to pursue. Whether you're carrying a rifle, climbing into a tree stand with your bow, or quietly stalking through the palmettos, every hunt offers a different challenge.
That's what keeps us coming back.
Learning the Land
Successful hog hunting starts long before you ever see a pig.
Fresh rooting, muddy wallows, tracks crossing a trail, and well-worn travel corridors all tell a story. Learning to recognize these signs is one of the most valuable skills any hunter can develop.
In Florida, hogs are often found around:
- Palmetto flats
- Cypress heads
- Oak hammocks
- Pine flatwoods
- Marsh edges
- Creek crossings
- Thick swamp cover
Water, food, and security are the three things hogs need every day. Find those together, and your chances improve dramatically.
Hunting With the Wind
If there's one lesson Florida's woods teach over and over, it's to respect the wind.
Wild hogs rely heavily on their sense of smell, and even the best camouflage won't make up for poor wind direction.
Before every stalk, take a moment to check the wind. A simple adjustment in your approach can make the difference between a successful hunt and watching a sounder disappear into the palmettos.
Swamp Co's Preferred Setups
Every hunter develops equipment they trust through experience. While there are many effective choices, we've settled on a few favorites over the years.
For firearm hunting, our preferred setup is a suppressed .300 Blackout.
Most of our hunting takes place in Florida's thick palmettos, oak hammocks, cypress swamps, and marsh edges where shots are typically well under 100 yards. The .300 Blackout performs exceptionally well in these conditions, and running it suppressed makes for a quieter, more enjoyable hunt while reducing disturbance in the surrounding woods.
When archery season arrives, we prefer mechanical broadheads.
With a properly tuned bow, we've found they provide outstanding field-point accuracy and dependable performance on well-placed shots. Like any hunting equipment, confidence comes from practice, and shot placement will always matter more than the specific broadhead you choose.
These are simply the setups we've grown to trust after countless mornings in Florida's backcountry.
Respect the Resource
Wild hogs are considered an invasive species in Florida, but that doesn't lessen our responsibility as hunters.
Every animal deserves respect.
Take ethical shots, recover every animal possible, and make full use of the meat. Responsible hunting reflects positively on the entire hunting community and helps preserve the traditions we care about.
